Oil and grease stains don’t just make a floor look bad, they can also cause falls, ruin your shoes and get tracked into the house. If you want to finish your floor with a coating, it is important to get rid of oil deposits for a good bond. Although, solvent-based remedies are harmful to the environment and can damage the concrete surface, small spots or spills can be removed with a strong detergent, a sponge and a scrub brush. Also, sawdust and other absorbent materials can remove standing oil but they do nothing about the oily stain left behind.

There are different chemical methods for removing oil or grease from concrete. A more aggressive method is the use of a commercial concrete degreaser or cleaner, a concentrated alkaline soap that is scrubbed into the surface of the concrete. The soap acts like ball bearings, it loosens up the oil to allow easier removal. The disadvantage is that most degreasers do not actually break down the oil, so they might not work well on heavily contaminated concrete or concrete that has been contaminated for a long time. In addition, they are more effective on porous concrete rather than concrete with a hard or dense finish.

Another treatment that is common for removing oil stains from concrete is a poultice. A poultice, used primarily on small, stubborn stains, is made by saturating an absorptive material with a strong solvent and then smearing the material over the stain. The poultice is then covered with plastic and the process of osmosis will then take over. The solvent breaks down the oil while the absorptive material sucks it out of the concrete.  But, this process usually takes a lot of time and it may not be cost-effective or even that practical for removing large stains.

The most recent advancement used in the removal of oil stains from concrete is the use of special single-celled microorganisms that thrives on crude oil and its derivatives, these microorganisms will eat the oil stains up like candy. Enzymes and oxygen then digests the oil and later turn it into carbon dioxide and more microorganisms. When the food source, which is the oil, is gone, the microorganisms die, thereby leaving the concrete patio clean and oil-free. This method is the same technology used in cleaning beaches and waterways whenever there is a large oil spillage. Two of the sources for these microbial cleaners are KT and ESI Microbial Products.

Stamped concrete is durable and can last for a very long time if is properly cared for. Like regular concrete, stamped concrete will provide years of service when properly installed and maintained, even when it is exposed to harsh weather conditions.

In some instances, stamped concrete can even be more durable than conventional concrete, particularly if a color hardener has been applied to its surface. Apart from the fact that the hardener impart color, it also make the surface stronger and more resistant to water penetration and abrasion. Some contractor usually apply several coats of protective sealer to stamped concrete so as to block the penetration of deicing chemicals, dirt,  oil and grease stains, and other substances. A sealer with a good-quality will not only make the concrete easier to clean, but also offer other benefits, like enhancing the color and preventing fading from UV exposure.

However, even properly sealed stamped concrete needs some routine maintenance. The level and type of maintenance required will depend on the exposure conditions and the amount and type of traffic it receives. Here are some general tips for cleaning and maintaining a stamped concrete to preserve its beauty and extend its life span.

Though a sealer might hinder stains, you still have to sweep and wash the surface regularly to avoid the build up dirt. You can pressure wash the exterior surfaces or scrub it with a mild detergent. As for interior surfaces, dry dust mopping or wet mopping of the floor is basically the only routine upkeep needed. Avoid using deicing salts on outdoor stamped concrete,  especially during the first winter after the installation of the pavement. Normally, sealers for decorative concrete usually fail in areas where deicing salts are used or that receive drip-off from parked cars. If the stamped surface starts to dull or lose its sheen after some time, recoating it with sealer will restore the luster. Make inquiries from the installer for recommendations of the best sealer that can be used.

If the stamped interior floor is subjected to lots of foot traffic, it is especially important to maintain the sealed surface so as to prevent wear patterns. Use of sacrificial floor wax or polish will provide extra protection by protecting the sealer from wear and also serving as a shock absorber to scratches, scuffs and grime.

How to Choose Your Interior Designer

If you plan to work with an interior designer, keep in mind that the relationship by nature is intimate. Due to this, immeasurable benefits are achieved when some time is taken in advance to consider what you want from this person you are about to call into your life. Like any relationship, clear communication can go a long way to alleviating any misunderstanding. Here are some of the major criteria in choosing an interior designer.

Evaluate your work style

Before taking the phone and start calling prospects, spend a few moments to reflect on your desired mode. This little introspection will go a long way to ensure that you hire the right person, and help establish a solid basis for a successful working relationship.

Determine the scope of your project

The scope of the project to some extent dictates the qualifications and experiences that must necessarily be held by an interior designer you’re hiring. If your home is a new one or an addition, or the completion of a major renovation of the existing space, then you are probably already working with an architect. This is good because architects and designers often work together to balance the aesthetics of the structure of the house, or “bones” with furniture and interior finishes.

Maybe you want your architect involved in the choice of an interior designer, or recommend someone he or she had worked with in the past, or using one of the interior designers the company has on staff. But if you are trying to redecorate a single room or your budget is for an area that does not require structural changes, then you may not be needing an interior designer in all. You might be happy to hire specialists such as color consultant who can work with your existing furniture and help renew the area with a new color and fabric choice. While my family lived in Louis, we remodeled our home, and we were very lucky to hire one of the best St. Louis designer who had vast knowledge and experience in all these field.

Forms of chiropractic therapy

St. Louis chiropractic careLast summer, my mom asked me to take her to a near by St. Louis chiropractic care center, I rarely knew much about chiropractors and their work, not until then. I made some research and was truly overwhelmed with the level of information i came across and also the role these professionals played in the live of many residing our us.

Here are some amazing findings;

Forms of chiropractic therapy As early as the year 1912, the field of chiropractic medicine was using methods that were devoid of surgeries and drugs. As some have come to refer to it, chiropractic is often termed the drugless, surgery-less medical field. Indeed, a closer look at the methods employed by chiropractors reveals that they harness the capabilities of exercise, light, heat, cold, massage, electricity and water to rid patients off their pains and limitations in the range of motion. The main methods employed by chiropractors include;

Traction employs the use of devices and machines to massage the back of the patient. The most common type has a set of rollers moving in a rhythm under the back of the patient to relieve them of the pain by easing the tension and inflammation therein. Through the process of non-surgical spinal decompression, the chiropractor can use machines to reduce the pressure on the nerve root by decompressing the discs in the vertebral column.

in this form of electromagnetic therapy, a shortwave current is a passed through the affected area. The waves of the current are controlled such that they pass the softer tissue without a problem but cause a warming sensation upon meeting denser tissues. The passing of this shortwave has various advantages among them the relaxation of the muscles and connective tissues besides decreasing the muscle spasms. Also, this form of therapy increases the rates of blood circulation in the affected area. In this way, it will hasten the healing process in the affected area. The warm sensation resulting from the passing of the current feels pleasant for most people.

Ultrasound has been used widely in the field of chiropractic care that it is not a surprise to know that it is also one of the major forms of chiropractic therapy. In this method, deep therapy is created and applied to soft joints and tissues using sound waves. This technique is applied on a remote scale and that is why it is referred to as micro-massaging. Among the many benefits of this technique are increasing the blood flow this aiding the healing process, reducing spasms, stiffness and back pain.

Electrical muscle stimulation;

The use of electricity also finds use in another area in terms of electrical stimulation of the muscles. Electrodes are attached to the skin at designated areas to send light amounts of electricity through the body. The electricity is sent through the body in small timed pulses. This form of therapy is focused on alleviation of back pain, curtailing of muscle spasms and the reduction of inflammation.

Most of these methods and forms of chiropractic therapy can be performed by most chiropractic institutions. However, the ones which employ electricity need more specialized care than mechanical ones. For a field which has used, among other arts, acupuncture and other healing therapies, chiropractic has come quite a long way to make it a very reliable field. In some cases, the chiropractor enlists the services of a trained medical professional skilled in specific types of therapy such as diathermy.
